10 Facts About Best Selling Thriller WISHBONE

Guest post by Justin Needham

What self-published novel is so intriguing, it has been stolen by a predatory “publisher” and had it’s contents replaced with porn on Amazon .com?

WISHBONE
by Brooklyn Hudson
A Manhattan power couple survive a tragedy and attempt a fresh start only to be plagued by unexplained and disastrous occurrences…be careful what you wish for.
1) WISHBONE was originally released as a self-published print and ebook on Amazon, February 21st, 2012.

Two weeks later, publishing rights to the book were falsely claimed by a predatory “publisher” professing to own the rights to Wishbone.

“These predators know there is little protection for self-published authors and they realize most do not have the funding nor wherewithal to battle in a federal court room. Most attorney’s wanted nothing to do with my case and wouldn’t even consider taking it on. This guy had committed the same crime against a dozen other female authors, some of which STILL do not have their books back. I learned quickly that self-publishing is a pitch black sea filled with sharks and that Amazon wants to make money selling our work, but the authors are not important to them. If your book is stolen, there are ten million other wannabe authors uploading books to replace yours in their listings.” ~Brooklyn

Brooklyn hired an attorney to go after the envious assailant who, feeling cornered, proceeded to upload porn content to the book and alter it’s Federal copyright information, attempting to destroy Brooklyn’s public credibility.

YES, PORN!
Pictures and all!

Amazon took the novel, which had quickly found its place in the top ten ebook thrillers,
down from its site, immediately. Not wanting to get in the middle of this, Amazon offered no support, protection, or even guidance to Brooklyn. It took over three months to fight for what was legally hers.

(Note to authors, copyright proves you wrote it, it does not prove youown it.

After thousands of dollars in legal fees, hundreds of hours of phone calls and written pleas, the involvement of the FBI and Attorney General, and months of lost sales and brand momentum, Brooklyn proved her rightful ownership of the book, WISHBONE, and the novel returned to the Amazon website on June 1st, 2012.

“Wishbone being stolen was one of the darkest periods in my life. I’ve written thirteen full length novels but, until WISHBONE, I had never had such a personal connection with my work. Don’t get me wrong, I would have been pissed regardless, but WISHBONE is very special to me and I had just retired from the music industry, putting everything into the potential success of this book and franchise. To have the book stolen from me was devastating and the lack of support from Kindle Direct Publishing was equally gut wrenching. Now, looking back and knowing WISHBONE is safe, there is a level of flattery in this event. There are a lot of books out there to steal, but he chose WISHBONE because he realized its potential.” ~Brooklyn

2) WISHBONE has been the Amazon #1 Best Selling Thriller in both the United States and United Kingdom.

“I’m very lucky to have come this far with my success as a self-published author. Regardless of our hopes and dreams, there is simply no possible way to reach our full potential audience on our own. WISHBONE has done amazing (for a self-published novel), but there are millions…billions, of readers out there who have no clue the book exists. Without traditional publishing, I have little hope of reaching those folks. I’m realistic and have no delusions. I have a true respect for the traditional publishing world. I’m not one of these authors who hide their insecurities behind trad pub bashing. Traditional publishing is REAL PUBLISHING. It provides a filter for readers…a stamp of approval or quality guarantee. Vanity publishing (self-publishing) is the equivalent of me waking up one day and deciding I’m a brain surgeon. Today I’m a brain surgeon! There are many very talented self-published authors out there, but there’s an awful lotta crap too! There’s no filter in self-pub.” ~Brooklyn

3) WISHBONE was written off the cuff, orally, in an effort to keep a friend entertained and in bed after a near fatal motorcycle accident.

Brooklyn vowed to incorporate her friend’s wish to cut his surgically attached apparatus, which held his shattered bones together, off with a wire cutter, into the story. She created a scene where, Julien Grenier, removes the barbaric External Fixation Device from his own leg, in order to reach his wife, in CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE.

She held off the scene until the end, forcing her friend to wait impatiently for weeks to hear it (buying time for his recuperation).

Eight years later, he asked Brooklyn to write the story on paper for him to keep. She did, and now we all get to own a copy.

“I was reluctant to take the time to write the story. I knew it had loopholes and some missing elements that would standout on paper. I was still working in music and had just written a stage production about the history of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band and was in the process of casting that project and nailing a showroom in Las Vegas for the show. My “Julien” was very convincing. He was sick at the time, with a chronic condition caused by the motorcycle accident eight years earlier, and once again bedridden and now far away in New York City (I was in Los Angeles and traveling back and forth to Las Vegas). I guess it brought back memories for him and how could I say no. I started writing that night and completed the first draft in three weeks, while continuing to work on the Springsteen stage production. I’m really glad I gave in to his request and took the time.” ~Brooklyn

4) (UPDATED) WISHBONE switched aim from the big screen to a cable TV series.

“Finding funding for a film is tough in any climate. The way things are right now, it seems to me that Hollywood is looking for guarantees, more than ever. It’s safest to put out re-boots/remakes of films with a proven history and big budget superhero films. WISHBONE is neither. I came within an inch of signing the dotted line on a film deal multiple times, but each time it fell apart at the final hour. Over the last year, I had three well-known producers ask me if I would be willing to consider TV. I said no –the first two times. I’m not sure why. I LOVE TV! From The Sopranos to Breaking Bad, Dexter, Six Feet Under, Sons of Anarchy, The Walking Dead, and American Horror Story…I watch them ALL. I finally woke up and realized this series is far better suited to a TV series than films. Anyone who has read the book will tell you, there’s no way to fit all those twists and turns into 90 or 100 minutes…and they’re right! It wasn’t easy and many scenes were cut out in the process of writing the screenplay. The more I cut, the more it lost. So, I said yes and began breaking the screenplay into one-hour episodes. For the first time in a long while, something felt right! Right now we are developing the packaging and seeking a network.”

I asked Brooklyn who she would like to cast in the role of Julien Grenier.

“Olivier Martinez (Unfaithful, SWAT, Blood and Chocolate). The role was written for him and I couldn’t imagine any other actor bringing Julien to life.”

5) It is never stated in the book whether the over-grown golden retriever puppy is male or female.

“You’ll eventually find out why.” ~Brooklyn

6) WISHBONE is a four part series, plus a companion book. All five books will be made available over time. It is rumored that Brooklyn’s favorite (aside from part one) is BOOK THREE.

“Of course, Book I is very special to me, but the story takes a turn in Book III, revealing many details and a twist that makes my own heart race. Everything you think you know is turned on its head. I love it! It was as much a surprise for me as it will be for the readers. Book IV is a prequel…readers will finally get their answers about Sarah and how she came to be.” ~Brooklyn

7) Brooklyn has taken WISHBONE off the table twice.

WISHBONE has consistent interest from studios and producers, but Brooklyn has never forgotten a quote from Anne Rice stating how unhappy she was with the casting and final cut of INTERVIEW WITH A VAMPIRE. She would rather have no movie than lose creative control.

“Well, now that our aim is to find a cable network and bring WB to life on television, things are different. TV is a kinder schoolyard for creators. As a showrunner and executive producer, I can not only stick to the story more authentically, but I can add more and take well developed characters to even greater heights.”  ~Brooklyn

8) The setting of KINGS HOLLOW is inspired by the town of Stamford, NY, located upstate in the Catskill Mountains. For a few years, Brooklyn owned a property, barn and dog kennel there.

Yes, she did have chickens!

“Our chickens were pets. We did eat the eggs though. I would sooner cut my own hand off than slaughter a chicken…or any animal. I’m not much of a meat eater and I’ve honestly not eaten one bite of chicken since writing the original book in 2010.” ~Brooklyn

She changed the name to Kings Hollow in homage to The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (a story she loved as a child) and author, Stephen King, who she considers her uninformed mentor and credits for her love of character driven thrillers and writing. She includes the name KING in all of her writing. You just have to find it.

“I lost my parents very young and Stephen King, through his writing, became a consistent, respected, adult male figure in my life. Someone to look up to. Something to aim for. Most important, he taught me about timing your plot and story build-up, and how to create characters that bleed.” ~Brooklyn

“I have no interest in meeting Stephen King. I’ve had several opportunities to meet him, while working in music, when his rock band played various venues. I avoid him like the plague. I would make an absolute ass of myself and probably sob like a baby. The gifts he gave me/us mean that much to me. He’s a humble man; I would only embarrass him. However, if I could have 1/16th of his prolific talent, I could go to my grave knowing I had done this craft (of storytelling) proud.” ~Brooklyn

9) Who’s the Muse?
  • Julien Grenier – Olivier Martinez
  • Arlette Vandermark – Francis Conroy
  • Jerome – Moussa Maaskrit
  • Rachael – maybe Ginnifer Goodman?
  • Dr. Lind – Jeff Bridges
“Both Sarah and Matt should be unknown actors. These are characters that could easily be spoiled by familiar faces and past performances. I need them to be Sarah and Matt first, for the audience, and nothing but.” ~Brooklyn

10) WISHBONE has an active private fan group on Facebook, which Brooklyn calls, THE SPOILER ROOM, and consists of behind-the-scenes chat, photos, and TV Series news. The group has occasional visits from the real life, JULIEN GRENIER – Brooklyn’s motorcycle riding, chain smoking, French friend, for whom the story was written. Both Brooklyn and “Julien” enjoy interacting with readers, answering questions and joining in the WISHBONE banter.

“I am so blessed to have such an interested, active and supportive readership. Truly blessed.” ~Brooklyn

Who is Brooklyn?

Originally from New York City, Brooklyn sent out her first publishing query (and received her first decline) at age eleven. Refusing to give up, she studied the masters and gradually honed her fiction skills, determinedly indulging her passion for character development and storytelling. The reigning Queen of Replica-Rock, she wrote, directed, and produced music themed theatrical stage shows for Las Vegas showrooms and touring companies. Throughout the decades, she penned thirteen novels and nine screenplays. She currently lives in Los Angeles with Willow, a tenacious fox squirrel, stealing hearts with his very own Facebook Fan Group, “What Did Willow Do?” Brooklyn now writes full-time.
What is WISHBONE about?

At the age of nine, growing up in the French countryside, Julien Grenier witnessed the brutal murder of his grandfather. Now, at forty-five, he continues to be plagued by horrific nightmares and reenactments of that tragic event.
Living a successful though austere lifestyle on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, Julien has recreated himself, building emotional walls that even his young wife cannot penetrate.
Though somewhat moody, Julien is a good man with a heart of gold, and a great sense of loyalty and responsibility; enabling his wife, Rachael, to turn a blind eye to his tightly-kept secrets.
Rachael is thirty-two years old; an art dealer and playful free spirit, but after a home invasion assault leaves her emotionally unstable and destroys their care-free and content world, they relocate to a safer environment with the hope of a fresh start.
Kings Hollow is a quaint town, nestled in the serene Catskill Mountains of upstate New York. At first, their new home appears to be the miracle they prayed for, until a traditional children’s game begins to destroy their bliss; Rachael is no longer herself and Julien is experiencing a string of bad luck and unfortunate accidents.
At the center of it all is seventeen-year-old Sarah, a part-time caretaker on the property.
Can Julien and Rachael escape the nightmare of Kings Hollow…or is this just Wishful thinking?
Why do readers love WISHBONE so much?

WISHBONE is a multi-layered thriller incorporating several sub-plots; in the vein of THE SIXTH SENSE, SHUTTER ISLAND and THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT. Mind-bending Horror at its best, Brooklyn Hudson takes you on a suspenseful roller coaster ride of emotional turmoil and shocking events.~JJ Kohler
Brooklyn and WISHBONE have been through it all, but if ever a self-published book would beat the odds, WISHBONE is doing that now. Self-publishing has never been a hotter trend than it is today and the battle between traditional publishing paths and vanity press continue to wage.

Brooklyn is negotiating a traditional publishing deal for the follow up installments in the WISHBONE series.

While interviewing Brooklyn, it didn’t take long to realize there is something unique here. There are talented authors and there are talented personalities. Brooklyn is a definite personality and her storytelling is every bit as captivating as she is.
